We envision a time of full, true equality for all citizens.

We see a time when gays and lesbians have equal rights

in all aspects of life in Pennsylvania and the United States.

We envision a time when the Republican Party leaders

embrace our community and welcome us unabashedly

and publically as a vital contigent of the GOP.

We see a stronger, larger and more unified Republican Party.

Wee see a time when fair-minded Republican candidates,

and that these candidates, both gay and straight, are elected

to public office at all levels of government.

January 09 President's Memo PDF Print E-mail

President-elect Barack Obama has stated many times how inspired he has been by the work and presidency of Abraham Lincoln. On his way to Washington, DC for his inauguration this month he plans to take the same route to DC from Philadelphia that Abraham Lincoln took when he was inaugurated in 1860. The Bicentennial of Lincoln’s birth on February 12, 1809 is one month away. Lincoln’s presidency and the issues he faced may seem like ancient history to us, and certainly many Log Cabin members and supporters have their own disagreements with President-elect Obama, but  I think this is the perfect time for us to reflect on why the Log Cabin Republicans exist in the first place. Indeed, why the Republican Party exists.  Lincoln was only the GOP’s second presidential candidate, and its first to win the White House. The party’s first platform in 1856 was based on the most radical civil rights platform ever advanced by a political party—the abolition of slavery in the United States. Lincoln himself has become a hero for those of us who dream of a time when all Americans can be treated with fairness and with equal access to liberty. How can we do our own part in helping further this vision?

First, we can let our elected officials, Republican candidates, and party leaders know when they have acted inappropriately. We can share our stories of being gay, lesbian, or transgendered with those around us. If we have religious or spiritual beliefs, we can talk with our spiritual leaders and our fellow believers about our faith, and remind them of our common humanity. We can learn about the history of other civil rights movements in our nation’s past: slavery, African-American civil rights, women’s rights, Jewish rights, immigrant rights, children’s rights. We can use our knowledge of these struggles to help build common ground with other fighters who have come before us.
