Rugs versus carpets in the home
Rugs and carpets are used for floor decoration, covering and care in the home. Though they perform similar functions in the home, rugs and carpets have some different features that make them distinct from each other. These features also come with different benefits.
Cleaning
Due to higher mobility of rugs, they are easier to cleaned and maintain. They are also easier to dry and give lesser room for growth of mildew and mould. Dust particles in a rug can easily be gotten rid of when taken outside and properly brushed.
Carpets due to their high level of immobility tend to capture in moisture and if they do not get adequate air to dry out, will give ample breeding ground for mould and mildew. They also have high tendency to trap in dust particles
Centre and area attraction and design
Rugs are often made specially as centre piece attractions. They add aesthetic appeal to the room and are great decor pieces. They can also serve as focal point for a selected decor theme. Area rugs can be easily maintained and have greater mobility. They are cheaper to purchase but cannot be used for ugly floors because they only cover a portion of the floor
Carpets are more expensive than area rugs because they cover the entire floor. They are easy to clean but may be harder to clean along the edges unlike area and centre rugs. Carpets cannot be easily moved and cannot be used as centre piece attractions. Carpets work better for ugly floors than area rugs because they totally hide the flooring unlike area rugs which hides only a portion of the floor.
Installation
Rugs usually do not need any special or technical installation. They are easy to lay on the floor especially for DIYers.
Carpets on the other hand may require special skill and technical installation expertise to put in a space.
Design
Rugs are more versatile when it comes to designs and colours. They are stylish, creative and more vibrant. They add more colour and light to a room than carpets. Rugs can also be used as accent to a décor theme
Carpet usually come in solid and neutral colours and are more restricted in design and creativity, hence lower aesthetic appeal. Carpets cannot be used as accent in a theme. They are usually bland and are less vibrant due to low level of colour mix and experimentation
Budget
Rugs work nicely for small budgets because they do not need to cover the entire room. Rug selection can easily be tailored to fit into any budget be it large or small
Carpets on the other hand cost more to use as floor covering. This is because carpets are designed to cover the floor from wall to wall. This makes them more difficult to work with in small budgets.
Maintenance
Because carpet covers more ground, it takes more time to clean and maintain than area rugs.
Area rugs cover less, space, are smaller, mobile and can easily be rolled and taken to rug cleaners for adequate cleaning. This makes rug maintenance easier.
